Massage Therapy Can Help Sciatica Sufferers

Diagram of SciaticaIf you suffer from Sciatica, massage therapy can be highly effective in providing relief. Sciatica is a pain that goes from the lower spine down the back of the leg. This medical condition occurs when the sciatic nerve becomes pinched. A herniated disc in a person’s spine typically causes it.

The pain can go anywhere from the lower spine down the leg. It is most commonly felt starting at the lower back and running through the buttock and the back of the thigh or calf. The symptoms of sciatica may be constant, or you may find that sitting for long periods of time can cause excruciating searing pain, or that sleeping is nearly impossible.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, and when you’ve experienced pain from your lower back down through your leg, you understand. Sciatica pain usually subsides on its own within a couple of months, but massage therapy can help alleviate the pain sooner, as it is a way of releasing endorphins, natural painkillers.

Trigger-point massage therapy is best since the sciatic nerve sits underneath a muscle called the piriformis, which is located beneath the glutes. When this muscle gets tight, it pinches the sciatic nerve, causing tingling and numbness down into the leg. We gently apply pressure to irritated and inflamed areas, or trigger points, in the piriformis muscle, as well as in muscles in the lower back and glutes. Often we do this in combination with other massage therapy to encourage overall relaxation and relief. However we do customize to your particular situation.

The goal of massage therapy is to promote circulation and better healing, which reduces the severity of sciatica pain. We work on all of the muscles that support the area of the back surrounding and affected by the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is a painful condition, we encourage you to find relief with massage therapy.
